INTRODUCTION
Public Interest Litigation is a tool used to achieve this goal in society. The preamble to the Constitution of
India envisages Social, Economic and Political justice. In order to achieve this Preamble Goal of Justice,
judicial activism has led to the birth of Public Interest Litigation. Public Interest Litigation is a court
proceeding filed by any public-spirited person to voice out the interest of the general public. In this
proceeding, the person fighting the litigation may not himself be the aggrieved person. The term ‘Public
Interest Litigation’ is coined by use of two terms, ‘Public Interest’ and ‘Litigation’.
EXPECTED OUTCOME –
1. Students will understand the role of Public Interest Litigation in promoting access to justice.
2. Students will acquire knowledge about matters under PIL, the difference between writ and PIL and
procedure to file PIL for the public interest.
3. Students will be alert to their own community surroundings where they can raise their voice for public
welfare.
4. Students will explore the ways in which a Public Interest Litigation could be drafted.
STEPS FOR THE ACTIVITY –
1. Display the Ppt in the classroom (Public Interest Litigation)
2. Explain in detail about the PIL and importance of PIL in the Indian Judiciary system.
3. The basis on the list given in slides, do you see any important social/civic issue around you which needs
to be raised/addressed through PIL?
4. If yes, check with the eligibility of filing PIL against the same and make a case using below points.
